Purple Martin House

While walking the backyard after church on Easter morning I spotted a swallow-like bird checking out my blue bird box.  Oh no!  Not there, there isn't room enough for a colony of purple martins.  So I quickly got out the purple martin house which I had cleaned and stored last autumn and put it on its pole.

Now we are ready!  I put up the house for the first time in 2012 and I knew that is sometimes takes years before purple martin scouts will select a new home.  But we got lucky.  Within two days we spotted a pair of purple martins checking us out and a small (two or three nesting pairs) colony established the first year.  We are awaiting their return this year.

I watched for activity and spotted the swallow-like bird again, this time in binoculars.  Turns it it was a tree swallow, a pair of which had nested in our bluebird house last year.  That's okay, I like tree swallows too.
